A Better Partnership

Private Client and Family Office

Numerous family offices and the individual family members that they serve have benefitted from the assistance and counsel of Warner Norcross + Judd attorneys. For decades, we have provided family offices with a full complement of legal services, including tax strategy, estate planning, entity formation and governance, private equity and transaction evaluations, asset protection, risk management, real estate and corporate services and related dispute resolution and litigation.

Our family office clients range from multimillion-dollar organizations with little or no full-time staff to complex and multi-faceted organizations with a large number of employees and billions in net worth. We build relationships with our family office clients so we can understand their priorities and expectations. Sometimes, through legacy planning, we even help them define their missions, visions, goals and values, which create their priorities and expectations. And because we have specialists in so many different areas, we often can find quick answers to complicated questions.

According to our latest Band 1 Ranking in the Chambers HNW Guide, peers in wealth law acknowledge Warner’s expertise, with one peer commenting that Warner “has a broad group of people who do private client services and I think they do a very good job with sophisticated clients.” Clients and wealth advisors also speak to our reputation, with one source telling Chambers, “They’re extremely knowledgeable, extremely talented, a very caring, hard-working team of individuals who do right by their clients and put their clients first.” Another interviewee states, “Clients seem to really appreciate not only the quality of work but the manner in which they communicate the work – how they keep up on their plans,” and praises Warner as “very, very good, high-quality, very consistent.”

The Private Client and Family Office Group can provide very specific and limited services or serve as a one-stop-shopping alternative for family offices. For many family offices we not only counsel our clients on their day-to-day business decisions and issues, but we also proactively help identify and achieve long-term goals and strategies. We offer to assist with all legal decisions and we are open to providing these and all our other services under alternative or fixed fee arrangements.

Our services are coordinated with each family office’s team of professional service providers. This coordination may involve simply cooperating with outside advisers in the delivery of services. It also may involve assisting the family office with selection of and contractual arrangements with other outside advisers.

Based on our experience, we’ve prepared an interactive chart that illustrates what a significant family office service team might look like and how several of our specialists can assist with the unique needs and structures of individual family offices. Webinar - Approaching Prenuptial Agreements Positively

Presented by Ric Roane and Jennifer Remondino

Viewing this recording works with both Internet Explorer and Google Chrome as your web browser.

The mere word “prenup” strikes fear and anxiety into the hearts of most who hear it. When we realize we have to broach this topic, our thoughts immediately jump to the worst-case scenario - a broken engagement. Or we envision suffering through months of arguments and negotiations to please a family that doesn’t seem to trust our judgment or future spouse. However, Prenuptial Agreements get a bad rap since their real purpose is to avoid future disputes rather than to create present conflict. Even if the wealth levels coming into the marriage are disparate, these agreements can be welcomed as providing advantages and protection for both partners.

Webinar - Starting (and Sustaining) Family Meetings: An Insider's Guide

Good communication is a cornerstone of successful wealth transfer, and family meetings are a good platform for communication. But, is there such a thing as “bad” communication or a “bad” family meeting? Is your family ready to start meeting? This webinar presents tips and lessons learned from a family meeting facilitator and a member of a family that overcame some initial stumbles and began holding successful family meetings.

Webinar - 10 Common Mistakes Managers Make

Presented by Jonathan Kok and DeAndre' Harris

Because family office managers often handle a wide variety of tasks for a family, they are bound to run into situations that they have not been trained to handle. This lack of training can lead to mistakes that cost the office and the family in time, talent, money and reputation. In this webinar, we explore typical situations where family office managers can err and provide strategies to help protect the family and keep the office compliant in potentially hazardous areas such as e-mail and text communications, talent recruitment and performance management.
