Summer 2023 Attorney Spotlight – Trusts and Estates Practice Group

Our attorney spotlights usually focus on one attorney in the practice group, helping you get to know each of our attorneys individually. This time we want to share information about our practice group as a whole.

What makes us unique?

With 30+ attorneys, we are by far Michigan’s largest trusts and estates practice group. We leverage that size by working together as a united team that meets weekly to share ideas, educate others on our areas of expertise and stay abreast of changes that may affect our clients. We believe that our unique team approach ensures that each of our clients benefits from the shared knowledge of the entire practice group.

We are a close-knit group, and we know our teammates’ capabilities and personalities very well, which allows us to staff matters carefully and strategically, with an eye toward skills, costs and work styles. This allows us to offer you the optimal team from our deep bench.

In what areas of law do we practice?

The attorneys in our group are all dedicated trusts and estates attorneys, and most of us have additional areas of related expertise, including family businesses, taxes, family offices, family cottages, charitable planning, prenuptial planning, succession planning, litigation, special needs planning and elder law. Many of us are licensed to practice in additional states, including Florida, which helps us effectively serve families that spend time in multiple places or are geographically dispersed.

What do we enjoy about trusts and estates law?

A running theme throughout our attorney spotlights has been that we chose to be trusts and estates attorneys because we wanted to build strong relationships with our clients, provide them with the peace of mind that good planning creates and be there to help when difficult situations arise. We like to hear about (and see pictures of!) your children and grandchildren, stop and chat when we see you around town, and celebrate your business and philanthropic successes.

Why did we want to work for Warner?

Our attorneys tell us they came to Warner because we have a reputation for excellence in both skills and service. Attorneys joining us just out of law school said they wanted to learn from top attorneys, and attorneys joining us later in their careers said that the vast experience and specialized skills of the Warner team would help them provide the best outcomes for their clients.

What would people be surprised to learn about us?

No Michigan firm has more attorneys elected as Fellows of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel or ranked in the Chambers High Net Worth Guide. Additionally, some of our attorneys have had significant roles in writing the legislation that currently governs trusts and estates in Michigan, including the Michigan Estates and Protected Individuals Code and the Michigan Trust Code. And we continue to participate in writing new legislation as needs arise.
