Warner to Host Webinar on Medical Marihuana

Confused about medical marihuana regulations in Michigan? The law firm of Warner Norcross + Judd LLP will tackle your toughest questions during a webinar on Monday, Dec. 4.

Attorneys focused on practice areas ranging from tax to real estate to banking will provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of medical marihuana in Michigan in advance of new licensing regulations that will come online in December – and in advance of a 2018 ballot initiative that could legalize marihuana usage in the state.

The hour-long session starts at noon and will cover:

  • Update on Medical Marihuana Legal Update by Alan T. Rogalski, who will provide an overview of legislation enacted since Michigan voters adopted the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act in 2008.
  • Is Marihuana Legal by Madelaine C. Lane and Brian P. Lennon, who will discuss the interplay between current state laws and federal criminal laws, which forbid the use of marihuana for any reason.
  • What Can I Do and Where? Land Use Regulations for Medical Marihuana by Robert J. Nolan, who will explore land use regulations for growers, processors, provisioning centers and others involved from seed to patient distribution.
  • Federal Taxation of the Marihuana Industry by Jay A. Kennedy, who will discuss the taxable nature of income earned from marihuana operations and the limits to deductibility of expenses.
  • Is Insurance Coverage Available Under Standard Commercial Insurance Policies? Jason L. Byrne will review insurance coverage offered by standards commercial property and liability policies in light of standard criminal acts exclusions.
  • Banking Marihuana: What Do We Do with All This Cash? Rodney D. Martin will review emerging payment alternatives and best practices for convincing financial institutions to accept proceeds from marihuana sales.
  • Does the Corporate Veil Apply to Cannabis Operators? Matthew M. Crowe and Matthew D. Johnson will talk about entity formation and the protections offered – or not – to those in the cannabis industry.
