Title VII Lessons Learned from the Philadelphia Flyers

After a brief break, Steve Palazzolo is back with a new Law Shanty episode on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The recent incident at the Philadelphia Flyers game last week where defenseman Ivan Provorov refused to wear a rainbow jersey during warmups in support of the LBGTQIA+ community has the internet up in arms. Provorov cited his Russian Orthodox religion as the reason for his decision. And, he was respectful when speaking to the press, stating his respect for everybody and everybody’s choices, including his own. Noting how the Flyers and Provorov handled this situation – Steve reflects on past Title VII lawsuits and the differences between those cases and the recent Philadelphia Flyers situation. He provides lessons learned and tips on creating a diverse and inclusive work environment that respects religious beliefs and sexual identities, while keeping you out of the courtroom.
