Senate Agrees on Federal Mandatory GMO Labeling Bill

Late yesterday, U.S. senators announced they reached an agreement on a bipartisan bill that will require mandatory nationwide labeling of food containing GMOs a/k/a bioengineered food. The announcement comes on the eve of the effective date (July 1st) of Vermont’s GMO labeling law, the first state-imposed law. Assuming the new federal bill passes and is signed into law, it will preempt the Vermont law and any other conflicting state GMO labeling laws. Under the current senate bill:
