Michael J. Bovill, a litigator and former U.S. Marine with international legal experience, has joined Warner Norcross + Judd LLP.
Bovill represents clients in employment litigation, white collar defense, business disputes and related industries on a host of civil and criminal matters, managing all aspects of pre-lawsuit negotiations and litigation. He has extensive experience representing the U.S. government and military on a wide range of matters, including the prosecution of complex felonies at home and terrorists abroad, drug and human trafficking across the Mexican border and compliance with international treaties. He will be based in the firm’s Grand Rapids office.
Bovill brings eight years of experience to his new role, most recently as a senior associate at Smith Haughey, Rice & Roegge, P.C. where he was a first-chair litigator on many matters.
Prior to entering private practice, he served in a variety of roles in California and Kuwait, including as prosecutor with the U.S. Marine Corps and as general counsel to a task force of 2,000 Marines in the Middle East. He negotiated agreements with the U.S. and foreign countries on the repositioning of strategic assets and produced opinions on combat operations between members of the coalition to defeat ISIS.
In addition to his strategic work with the U.S. Department of Defense, he represented the U.S. government as an employer on issues such as discrimination, sexual harassment and employee misconduct. Bovill also served as a special assistant U.S. attorney in California, prosecuting civilian criminal offenses.
He was recognized as a Grand Rapids Top Lawyer in criminal defense in 2022 and as a Rising Star by Michigan Super Lawyers Magazine. Bovill holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Loyola University in Chicago and his juris doctor from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law.
A native of California, he now resides in Rockford with his wife, Alexa, and their two daughters.
