Detroit Free Press calls for MSC to review recusal rules

In an editorial today, the Detroit Free Press called on the Michigan Supreme Court Justices to agree to review rules for when they must recuse themselves.' Presently, justices decide for themselves whether to' recuse themselves, and are not required to explain their decision in writing.' ' The editorial further suggested that at a minimum, "justices asked to disqualify themselves ought to be required to explain their decision in writing, and those decisions should be subject to some form of judicial review."' The editorial further recommended a constitutional convention to consider whether judges should be elected at all.' The complete editorial can be found here.
