Warner Partner Stephen C. Waterbury Recognized in Inaugural Hall of Fame by Michigan Lawyers Weekly

Warner Norcross + Judd LLP partner Stephen C. Waterbury has been inducted into the inaugural Hall of Fame by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

For its first Hall of Fame class, the publication selected 20 Michigan attorneys for their notable success and demonstration of strong leadership both within and outside of their chosen legal field. Waterbury concentrates his practice on general business and securities law with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions. He is the only West Michigan attorney honored with this award.

His nomination read in part: “Over the course of his nearly four-decade legal career, Stephen C. Waterbury has worked on hundreds of deals worth billions of dollars. His influence on the M&A industry has a much broader scope than just getting the best terms for his clients. Rather, the Harvard Law School graduate has focused specifically on teaching, training and mentoring successive generations of deal advisers, extending his reach well beyond the firm by having a material impact on the personal and professional lives of dozens of people.”

Alongside fellow recipients, Waterbury will be honored during an awards luncheon ceremony on May 30 and will be profiled in an event publication inserted in Michigan Lawyers Weekly on June 3.

During his career, Waterbury has led or participated in hundreds of deal teams involving clients in manufacturing, medical devices, energy, insurance, human resources, software, construction, agriculture, packaging and other areas. In addition, Waterbury is experienced in international business transactions and corporate governance best practices. He serves as counsel to a variety of leading Michigan businesses, including multigenerational family businesses, and frequently attends client board meetings.

Waterbury has received numerous awards throughout his legal career, including recognition by Best Lawyers, Michigan Super Lawyers and Chambers USA. In fall 2018, Waterbury was recognized by the Association for Corporate Growth and business publication MiBiz as the first recipient of a new Hall of Fame Award that honored his successful career in mergers and acquisitions.

However, Waterbury’s professional work and dedication to the law and to Warner is only part of what sets him apart. He places significant importance on giving back to the Grand Rapids community through leadership and volunteer roles. He currently serves as a trustee to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, which he also advises as legal counsel. He served for 11 years on the board and executive committee of the Grand Rapids Symphony, including two as board chair. He is the past president of the University Club of Grand Rapids and ACG Western Michigan and past chair of the Saint Andrew Cathedral Pastoral Council.
