Warner Attorney Chuck Burpee Volunteers at the Grand Rapids Expungement Fair

WZZM 13 On Your Side visited the Grand Rapids Expungement Fair on Saturday, August 21, where volunteer attorneys helped more than 150 people with convictions take that first step toward expungement. The Clean Slate law is legislation that was passed in October 2020, with the law taking effect in April 2021. Legal Aid of West Michigan co-hosted this expungement fair to help facilitate the process of removing convictions for eligible individuals.

Warner attorney Chuck Burpee was among the volunteers who offered pro bono expungement services at the fair and said it was some of the most rewarding work he’s done across his 40 years of practicing law.

“It’s good for everybody,” Burpee said. “It broadens the pool of applicants for businesses, improves their access to talent and it enables the individuals to participate in that process as well.”

Legal Aid of West Michigan offers support services and can connect those with expungable records to attorneys who can help.
