Warner Announces Winners of 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Legacy Contest

Warner Norcross + Judd LLP announced the winners of the 17th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Legacy Contest.

Open to all sixth graders in the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, students were asked to identify and react to a racial social justice issue meaningful to them. The contest allows submissions in any format, and entries included video, painting, song, essay, poem and sculpture, among others.
This year’s winners are:

  • Adam Lobo, Center for Economicology – first place for “Black People Need to Be Heard,” a poem that addresses the death of George Floyd, encouraging change and respect
  • Julia Rusiecki, C.A. Frost Middle High School – second place for “Asian Hate,” a slide presentation that looks at the history of Asian hate crimes and offers five ways to stop them.
  • Sneha Dixit, North Park Montessori – third place for “We are One, Be the Change,” a painting that encourages people to treat others the same – no matter the color of their skin.

An additional 18 students received honorable mentions. They attend C.A. Frost Middle High School, Center for Economicology and North Park Montessori.
The goal of the contest is to encourage students to think about how King’s legacy of peace and justice applies to the world in which they live. The submissions were evaluated by 45 Warner firm members on the basis of connection to the contest theme, personal connection, message and overall impact.
All winning and honorable mention students and their parents are invited to attend the 36th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Commemoration at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17. This year’s event will be virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The winners of this year’s contest will present their submissions through a pre-recorded video that can be seen here
Each winning and honorable mention student will receive a gift card to We Are Lit! Multicultural Bookshop and all others will receive a personalized certificate of completion.
The winning submissions are available here.
