MI Department of Treasury Waives Penalty and Interest for Monthly Sales, Use and Withholding Tax Returns Due March 20, 2020

The Michigan Department of Treasury (“Department”) has announced that it will waive penalty and interest for 30 days for monthly sales, use and withholding tax returns due March 20, 2020 due to compliance difficulties related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Any return or payment due on March 20, 2020 may be submitted to the Department without penalty or interest through April 20, 2020. The current waiver is limited to sales, use and withholding tax payments and returns due on March 20, 2020. Any payment or return otherwise due after that date will not be eligible for relief under the current waiver. Relief for those payments and returns are subject to further guidance. Also, the waiver is not available for accelerated sales, use or withholding tax filers. Those taxpayers should continue to file returns and remit any tax due as of the original due dates.
