Local News Story Sheds Light on the Importance of Hiring Documented Workers

As a supplement to our Form I-9 E-alert sent on September 19, a news story about the indictment of two agribusiness owners recently appeared in The Bay City Times. The report demonstrates that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan has been aggressively targeting agribusinesses for allegedly hiring unauthorized immigrants. This reinforces the importance of properly completing Form I-9 for all newly hired employees to verify their identity and authorization to work in the United States.

A new Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) is scheduled to be published by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) by November 22, 2016. Employers may continue to use the current Form I-9 (revision date of 03/08/2013 N) until January 21, 2017. After January 21, 2017, the new form must be used. You can find information on the USCIS website at I-9 Central

If you have questions concerning I-9 compliance or other immigration matters, please contact Michael Wooley or Angela Jenkins.
