Warner Partners Matthew Nelson and Brian Wassom represented two Bloomfield Township residents, Val Murray and Kathleen Norton-Schock, in a lawsuit regarding posts they made on neighborhood social media platform NextDoor and the Bloomfield Township Supervisor Leo Savoie and Treasurer Brian Kepes.
Brian Wassom says the lawsuit is an affront to the First Amendment and has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, in which Savoie and Kepes allege that false information posted on NextDoor resulted in the resounding failure of an August 2019 ballot request for a township-wide special assessment.
The lawsuit “would be comical if it were not such an affront and threat to basic notions of representative democracy,” the motion to dismiss says. “The suit arises for the simple reason that the Individual Defendants successfully engaged in online politics.”
