FROM THE CHAIR – Jennifer Remondino
By law, you are not allowed to make medical decisions or handle financial matters for a child over the age of 18 even if they become incapacitated or decide to travel abroad. As your children go off to college or start their new careers, they should at least have a patient advocate designation (providing someone with decision-making ability and access to medical records in an emergency) and a financial power of attorney (that allows someone to handle financial matters as needed). If the child has any assets, they should also have a will. See our list of things to do when your child turns 18 here.
