Emerging Intellectual Property Legal Trends for 2017 and Beyond

The law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP and the Original Equipment Suppliers Association invite automotive supplier executives to a breakfast briefing “Emerging Intellectual Property Legal Trends for 2017 and Beyond,” to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, in Troy, Mich.

Warner attorneys will lead sessions focused on legal issues that stem from the rapid evolution of new automotive technologies. Also joining the discussion is Christopher Ongena, a Deloitte Consulting principal, who will offer strategies to help suppliers monetize their intellectual property portfolios. The event, which will be held at the Detroit Marriott Troy hotel at 200 W. Big Beaver, begins with registration, networking and a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:00 a.m.

Julie Fream, OESA’s president and CEO, and Thomas J. Manganello, a Warner partner and co-chair of its Automotive Industry Group, will introduce the sessions that will cover a variety of topics to help suppliers protect their intellectual property and trade secrets. Individual discussions include:

Janet Ramsey, Warner partner: Automotive Impact of Recent SCOTUS IP Decisions
Supreme Court IP decisions have exploded in the last 20 years, with implications for auto suppliers in everything from venue to the rights of vehicle owners to modify and repair patented vehicle components. Learn about some of the most important changes along with where the Court might be headed next and how your business strategies could be impacted going forward.

Gregory DeGrazia, Warner partner: International Intellectual Property Strategies
International automotive trade continues to accelerate, and every supplier can become a critical component of the global supply chain.  Protecting patents, trademarks and trade secrets on a world wide scope can be difficult and costly.  Gregory DeGrazia provides insight into effective and cost efficient strategies for achieving success.

Michael Azzi, Warner associate: Trade Secrets and the Automobile
The E.D. of Michigan is now one of the top ten most active trade secret districts. Michael Azzi will provide practical guidance on defining and protecting your trade secrets in the current legal landscape, including a discussion of the recently enacted federal Defend Trade Secrets Act and current legal considerations when determining how best to protect your trade secrets from misappropriation.

Vito Ciaravino, Warner partner: Autonomous Vehicle IP Redux
The drive toward autonomous technology continues to accelerate.  Two year ago we reviewed some of the technologies being patented and possible implications for automotive suppliers.  Patent publications covering aspects of autonomous technology have grown significantly since then. Vito Ciaravino updates our earlier findings and provides up to date insight on what new technologies may emerge in importance.

Christopher Ongena, Deloitte Consulting principal: Licensing and Monetization of Intellectual Property
Intellectual Property is a valuable asset that is often underutilized as a revenue generator.  Monetization of intellectual property can provide a significant revenue stream to any technology driven organization, including traditional manufacturing companies that have made breakthroughs in products or processes.  Christopher Ongena presents new IP monetization strategies and related services developed by Deloitte.
