COVID-19 Tips for Video Parenting Time

Whether you live out of state, are self-quarantining or have agreed to wait until after the emergency orders expire to exercise parenting time, staying connected with your child during this difficult time is important. One of the great alternatives to spending physical time with your child is to connect with your child via FaceTime by following these tips:

  1. This can be a confusing time for children. Answer the questions posed by your child honestly but age-appropriately.
  2. Use FaceTime, Skype, Zoom or another electronic app to engage with your child. This will look differently depending on your child’s age. This Parent Tip Sheet For Video Visits from RC4 shows how to make video parenting time engaging and fun for children of all ages.
  3. As important as it is for your child to see and engage with you, consistency is also important. For instance, if you normally have dinner during the week with your child, use FaceTime to have dinner together while in different households.
  4. Flexibility by each parent will make you and your child less anxious and reduce stress for everyone during this challenging time.
