Remembering Kevin G. Dougherty

Quiet, focused and even-tempered, Kevin G. Dougherty was as comfortable defending clients in the courtroom as he was running his dogs in a cornfield. Kevin passed away on Saturday, Oct. 3 after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Kevin grew up in Southern Indiana and studied at Franklin College outside of Indianapolis, earning a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude. He studied law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, also earning magna cum laude distinction.

Like so many Warner attorneys, Kevin spent his entire legal career at the firm. He joined the firm on the recommendation of a friend and colleague, celebrating his 30th anniversary at Warner this year. A litigator to his core, Kevin focused on corporate defense and tort cases, partnering with a broad range of clients to provide a vigorous defense in some of their darkest hours in business.

Kevin was unflappable, whether walking into a courtroom to defend a wrongful death case or standing over a tough shot to win a golf match. He was a fierce advocate for his clients, who appreciated his keen legal strategy, his convincing arguments in the courtroom and his calmness under pressure. Kevin represented some of the firm’s largest clients, as well as our smallest, providing all with exceptional representation and excellent legal and business counsel.

One of his partners remembered him by saying: “Kevin always had your back. He would step in with his quiet and calm demeanor, and bring clarity and insight to a thorny problem, whether it was a conflict issue, a strategic approach to litigation, or a good old-fashioned courtroom battle, which he seemed to relish.”

Kevin led the firm’s pro bono program for decades, ensuring our attorneys and our firm gave back to those in need of good legal representation throughout our state. He also served as Associate General Counsel to the firm, showing the trust the firm had in him to keep us on solid legal footing. We have always been grateful for his service in each of these roles.

Away from the office and courtroom, Kevin loved hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors with his family and friends. He also loved golf and was an exceptional golfer, playing at the college level and for years on a league at Blythefield Country Club. He was a founding member and faithful participant in a golf weekend with firm members each fall, joining in the 20th anniversary celebration of the gathering of colleagues in 2019.

Kevin was a dedicated husband and father, never prouder of Claire’s theatrical talents, Maddy’s prowess at sports, and ever supportive of Sean, no matter what came his way. We are keeping his wife, Missi, and their children in our hearts. We remember Kevin as a dear friend and partner, appreciating his steadiness and sense of humor. He made Warner a better place, and we miss him deeply.
