Environmental Law

Among the largest in the Midwest, Warner Norcross & Judd’s Environmental Law Group is widely recognized as an authority on environmental compliance and the management of environmental risk.

Our broad and unique experience includes brownfield redevelopment, representing Fortune 100 clients at many of the most significant CERCLA and RCRA sites in the region, and obtaining permits for power and cement plants, hard rock mining operations and the first commercial scale cellulosic ethanol plant. Our comprehensive experience extends to transactional due diligence, litigation and defense of civil and criminal enforcement – and we have more environmental attorneys listed in The Best Lawyers in America than any other law firm in Michigan.

Legislators call upon us to help write and lobby for environmental laws and regulations. We played a key role in drafting important legislation and rule-making, including the 2007 brownfield incentive amendments to state law, the 2008 Michigan Business Tax Credits, 2008 amendments to Michigan’s solid waste management legislation and 2010 amendments to Michigan’s primary cleanup law (Part 201). We have handled landmark environmental cases that establish legal precedent and counsel clients throughout the U.S. on matters involving the Clean Air Act, RCRA and the Clean Water Act.

Our peers think we’re pretty good environmental lawyers, too. One of our partners chaired the ABA’s Section of Environment, Energy and Resources; four partners have chaired the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan; a fifth is nominated to become the chair; one currently is chair of the Michigan Brownfield Association and yet another was the Chief Administrative Law Judge for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for more than 20 years.
