Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Legacy Contest

In connection with the celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the law firm of Warner Norcross + Judd sponsored its 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Legacy Contest on Monday, January 17, 2022, in partnership with Grand Rapids Public Schools. The purpose of the contest, which is open to all sixth grade students within GRPS, is to encourage students to think about how Dr. King's legacy of peace and justice applies to the world in which they live.

Students were asked to identify and react to a racial social justice issue that is meaningful to them, and submit their entry in any creative format they wished.

50 members of Warner judged the entries and awarded first, second and third place winners along with 18 honorable mentions. These students will receive a gift card to We Are LIT Multicultural Bookshop and all participants will receive a certificate of participation.

This year’s winners are:

  • Grand Prize: $350 Gift Card to We are LIT! Multicultural Bookshop: Adam Lobo: Poem “Black People Need to be Heard” Center for Economicology
  • First Runner Up: $225 Gift Card to We are LIT! Multicultural Bookshop: Entry #127 (Set 8): Julia Rusiecki: “Asian Hate” Slide Presentation. CA Frost Environmental Science Academy
  • Second Runner Up: $125 Gift Card to We are LIT! Multicultural Bookshop: Entry #45 (Set 12): Sneha Dixit: Painting “We Are One” North Park Montessori
