Senate Agrees on Federal Mandatory GMO Labeling Bill

Late yesterday, U.S. senators announced they reached an agreement on a bipartisan bill that will require mandatory nationwide labeling of food containing GMOs a/k/a bioengineered food. The announcement comes on the eve of the effective date (July 1st) of Vermont’s GMO labeling law, the first state-imposed law. Assuming the new federal bill passes and is signed into law, it will preempt the Vermont law and any other conflicting state GMO labeling laws. Under the current senate bill:
  • All manufacturers of bioengineered food products must disclose the use of GMOs for each product.
  • Manufacturers may select from many methods to disclose GMO content, including labeling, QR codes, 800 numbers and websites.
  • Foods containing meat, poultry or eggs as the main ingredient are exempt.
We will keep you posted on additional details and any changes to the bill as it progresses into law.

We are advising clients on GMO labeling requirements and scheduling private educational seminars and Q&A sessions. If you have questions about the labeling requirements or other food regulatory questions, please contact Chris Predko at 616.752.2190 or
