Michigan Lawyers Weekly Recognizes John V. Byl as Leader in the Law

John V. Byl, a partner with the law firm Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, has been recognized by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as one of its 2012 Leaders in the Law.

Byl concentrates his practice on environmental law and economic incentives.  He is currently the co-chair of the firm’s Economics Incentives Group and chair of the Michigan Chapter of the National Brownfield Association.  He will be honored March 15 during the fourth annual Leaders in the Law luncheon in Troy.

Byl’s nomination read, in part:  “John is recognized as a leading lawyer in environmental law, with a specific focus in brownfields, and economic development.  His work has helped secure more than $600 million in local, state and federal incentives for clients . . .  throughout the state.  In fact, he is widely recognized as THE go-to lawyer for businesses that want to secure brownfield, TIF and related financing to redevelop properties.”

To be considered for the recognition, Michigan Lawyers Weekly looked for attorneys who:

  • Exemplify the noble tradition of the legal profession, coupled with commitment to practicing law in Michigan
  • Demonstrate a record of winning cases, solving problems or coming to judicial conclusions that reflect the utmost integrity
  • Possess the ability to achieve success in a practice area while displaying strength of character that transcends results
  • Display passion on behalf of clients and the legal community.

Byl has received numerous honors during his career.  He is recognized in Best Lawyers in America and Michigan Super Lawyers, earning top Grand Rapids honors in both.  He is the vice chair of the national board of the National Brownfields Association.  Byl is the past chair of the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and the past chair of the West Michigan Air and Waste Management Association.  He is also a member of the American Bar Association and Grand Rapids Bar Association.

He lectures regularly on a wide variety of environmental and economic incentive topics throughout the state.
