Two Warner Norcross Attorneys to Be Honored by Best Lawyers in America During Special 25th Anniversary Event

Two Warner Norcross & Judd LLP attorneys will be honored by The Best Lawyers in America® during a special 25th anniversary event in April.

Hugh H. Makens and Charles E. McCallum will be recognized by the country's most well-respected rating agency during a three-day event that will be held in Atlanta. Makens and McCallum are among the elite group of attorneys who have been listed in Best Lawyers since the publication began rating attorneys in 1983.

Best Lawyers, which is the oldest lawyer-rating publication in the country, compiles its list of outstanding attorneys through peer-review surveys that poll thousands of lawyers across the country. The annual publication now lists more than 36,000 attorneys in 78 specialty areas – although fewer than 1,400 have been listed in each edition as have Makens and McCallum.

"We are so pleased to honor Hugh H. Makens and Charles E. McCallum as two of the lawyers who have been with us from the start," said Steven Naifeh, president and founder of the publication. "The Atlanta event will provide an extraordinary opportunity to recognize the careers of the lawyers who have been listed in Best Lawyers from its beginning.

"They have not only contributed in an exceptional way to the legal profession but have also played important civil roles in their communities."

Makens, the former chair of the Warner Norcross Securities Group, concentrates his practice in securities and corporate law. Active both professionally and personally, he has served on the Market Operations Review Committee of Nasdaq, as a commentator for the Uniform Securities Act Project of the National Conference of Commissioners, and on several committees of the North American Securities Administrators Association. Makens is also a former director of the Michigan Corporation and Securities Bureau and a past president of the North American Securities Administrators Association. He is a co-author of Michigan Securities Regulation.

He is a member of the American Bar Association where he has chaired several committees; the State Bar of Michigan where he served as co-chair of the Uniform Securities Act Subcommittee for the Business Law Section; the Federal Bar Association; and the Illinois Bar Association.

He is a past chair of the Business Law Section of the ABA. He has been honored by the State Bar of Michigan for his lifetime contributions to the legal profession with the inaugural Stephen H. Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer Award.

A frequent author, lecturer and panelist for trade associations and professional organizations, Makens is also recognized in Michigan Super Lawyers, Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in American Law. He is listed by Chambers USA as one of the leading attorneys in Michigan for his experience in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions.

McCallum, who concentrates his practice in corporate and international business law, currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TerraLex, a global network of independent law firms.

He is a member of the American Law Institute, a fellow of the American College of Law Practice Management, and a past chair of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. An active member of the American Bar Association, McCallum is the past chair of the ABA Section of Business Law and a past chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility.

Active in the West Michigan community, McCallum is a past chair of the Michigan District Export Council and a recipient of the West Michigan World Trader of the Year Award. He is also past chair of Priority Health, the former Butterworth Hospital, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Grand Rapids Area Transit Authority, and a past president of the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

McCallum served for six years as managing partner of Warner Norcross and is a past chair of the Firm's International Business Practice Group. He is listed by Chambers USA as one of the leading attorneys in Michigan for his international experience in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions.
