Securities lawyer at Warner appointed to chair ABA Committee

Shane Hansen has been appointed to a three-year term as chair of the American Bar Association Committee on State Securities Regulation, a group of more than 650 securities attorneys and paralegals from around the country. Hansen, who has practiced law for nearly 30 years, is a partner in the Grand Rapids office of Warner Norcross & Judd.

This ABA committee focuses on developments and changes in regulatory and enforcement matters involving state securities laws. It monitors and regularly comments on proposed rules, policy statements and administrative orders, as well as model rules proposed by the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), an international organization of state and provincial regulators in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

“One of the committee’s chief purposes is to provide a channel of communication between securities lawyers and securities regulators at the state level,” Hansen said. “The committee also coordinates communications with other ABA committees on matters intersecting with federal securities laws.”

The committee often raises legal practice-related questions and concerns through NASAA’s Ombudsman. Hansen’s prior and continuing leadership role on the committee has been as co-chair of its Subcommittee of Liaisons to Securities Administrators. In that role, he has prepared an annual report covering securities law developments in all 50 states and Canadian provinces.

“Attorneys in our law firm have long been actively involved in the ABA and its leadership of several practice areas,” said Hansen, “particularly in business, securities and environmental law matters. Our clients have always benefited from our leadership, cutting-edge knowledge and frequent dealings with securities regulators in Michigan and across the country.”

For the last five years, Hansen has been named a Best Lawyer in America in the areas of corporate law and securities law. He also has been a Michigan Super Lawyer for four of the last five years. Hansen co-chairs the firm’s Broker-Dealer and Investment Adviser Practice Group, which brings together a highly experienced, multi-disciplinary group of attorneys and securities compliance specialists who are familiar with and serve this sector of the financial services industry.
