Eugene E. Smary Honored for Environmental Expertise

Eugene E. Smary, a partner with Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, has been selected for inclusion in two prestigious international publications for his expertise in environmental law.

Smary, who concentrates his practice in environmental and natural resources law, is being listed in:

  • The International Who's Who of Environment Lawyers (2006 Edition). The annual publication, now in its second year, recognizes Smary as the "number one practitioner in Michigan for environment legal expertise," noting that he received "more nominations from clients and peers . . . than any other environment law specialist in Michigan."

  • Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Environment Lawyer (2005 Edition). Smary was recognized as one of the top 20 environmental lawyers in the United States. More than 4,000 senior in-house counsel, partners at preeminent law firms and specialists in more than 55 countries were polled for this guide.

"We are very proud that Gene's accomplishments in the environmental arena have been recognized both nationally and internationally," said Alex J. DeYonker, managing partner for Warner Norcross. "Inclusion in these publications is open to only a select few attorneys. Gene's expertise in the area of environmental and resource law, his tireless work for clients and his many contributions to the legal profession make him the ideal candidate for this honor."

Smary has more than 25 years of experience in environmental law, representing individuals, corporations, municipalities and trade associations. He is the past chair of the American Bar Association's 10,000-member Section of Environment, Energy and Resources and currently serves as its liaison to the Canadian Bar Association.

He is also the past chair of the Environmental Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan and the Grand Rapids Bar Association. He writes and lectures frequently in the United States and Canada on many environmental subjects, and has taught environmental law as an adjunct associate professor of law at the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Smary has also been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America since 1991. He is a fellow of both the Michigan State Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation.

Active in the community, Smary served as the chair of the Grand Rapids Historical Commission and currently serves as a trustee of the Grand Rapids Historical Society. He is a past board member of Gilda's Club of Grand Rapids and of the national board of directors for the Notre Dame Law Association.

Smary holds a bachelor of arts in political science from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, and a master's degree and a doctor of jurisprudence cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, where he was Note and Comment Editor for the Notre Dame Law Review. Prior to joining Warner Norcross in 1976, he served as a law clerk for the Hon. John A. Danaher of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
