Did Pokemon Go too far?


This weekend’s wildly popular introduction of Pokemon Go has helped reboot the Niantic franchise, but Warner Norcross partner and privacy expert Norbert Kugele said the company might have gone too far in requesting access to account information. When gamers downloaded the Pokemon Go app this weekend, Niantic requested full access to their Google accounts – which meant that the company could see the full contents of a user’s Google accounts, from calendar to Gmail to Google Docs. This was apparently a mistake, as Niantic wasn’t actually using all the data that the privacy policies and permissions allowed it to use.  While the company’s update has fixed the error, Norbert says that it’s a great reminder for companies to ensure that their privacy policies and permissions align with their actual data practices.
