MSC removes Judge Adams from office, rejecting the JTC's suspension recommendation

After perjuring herself in divorce proceedings, forging her former attorney's signature on court filings, and lying under oath to the Judicial Tenure Commission, Judge Deborah Ross Adams will no longer sit as a Third Circuit Judge in Wayne County. The Supreme Court in In re Adams agreed with the JTC that Judge Adams had lied under oath in divorce proceedings when she told Judge Brennan that she had not improperly tried to contact him or his office the day before. The Court also agreed with the JTC that Judge Adams had signed her former attorney's name to legal documents and filed them with the court without her former attorney's permission. The Court further agreed with the JTC that she lied to the JTC about contacting Judge Brennan's court on only four occasions (she did so dozens of times), having never been told by Judge Brennan's staff that her calls were improper, and having her former attorney's permission to sign and file the legal documents, among other things. The Court did not agree, however, that this only warranted a 180-day suspension. Applying the factors in In re Brown, 461 Mich 1291 (2000), the court chose to remove Judge Adams from office.
