Michigan’s Autonomous Vehicle Legislation in The Fast Lane to Becoming Law

Legislation allowing for the testing of autonomous motor vehicles was advanced through the House of Representatives yesterday and today.  Yesterday, the House Commerce Committee reported Senate Bills 169 and 663 to the full House of Representatives.  The House just passed SB 169 by a margin of 107-1 and SB 663 by a margin of 107-0. SB 169 would allow for the testing of vehicles on which automated technology has been installed that would enable the vehicle to be operated with or without any control or monitoring by a human operator.  SB 663 would limit the liability of a manufacturer of a vehicle to those defects that were present in the vehicle when it was manufactured. Senate concurrence in the House passed version of the bills is expected later today as both Houses of the Legislature are expected to adjourn for the year this evening.
