Biography

Ryan is a litigator who focuses his practice on employment litigation and white collar criminal defense.  Helping clients navigate the difficulties brought on by tricky and complex interpersonal situations is what motivates him.  “I really like the human element of criminal and employment cases and helping people through challenging times,” shared Ryan. “Every day is new and exciting and that keeps me engaged.”
 
Ryan synthesizes his employment and criminal expertise through his work conducting internal investigation for WN+J’s clients.  Ryan regularly works with clients to provide thorough, non-disruptive investigations into internal HR matters, discrimination and retaliation claims, criminal  defense concerns, and Title IX issues.

Labor and Employment Litigation

  • Regularly defends employers in state and federal court on a variety of discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims under both state and federal law.
  • Co-counsel for large manufacturing company obtaining summary judgment in case involving failure to hire claim.
  • Co-counsel for telecommunications provider obtaining summary judgment in case involving discrimination and FMLA retaliation claims.
  • Co-counsel for hotel chain obtaining favorable settlement in case involving ADA claim.
  • Co-counsel for large shoe manufacturer successfully obtaining resolution in contract dispute.
  • Conducts frequent internal investigations.


Commercial Litigation

  • Regularly represents clients defending a wide assortment of felony and misdemeanor criminal charges, ranging from white collar federal crimes such as interstate wire fraud and health care fraud to state-level misdemeanors such as operating while intoxicated.
  • Appears regularly in district and circuit courts in Kent, Ottawa, and Berrien counties to represent defendants at all stages of the criminal process.
  • Appointed by United States Federal District Court for the Western District of Michigan to a three-year term on its Criminal Justice Act panel, thereby defending indigent clients regularly on federal charges in front of every West Michigan federal court judge.
  • Conducts frequent internal investigations.
