Warner Norcross Partner Matthew Nelson Honored by Michigan Lawyers Weekly

11/16/2012

Michigan Lawyers Weekly has honored Matthew T. Nelson, a partner with the law firm Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, as one of 20 “Up & Coming Lawyers” for 2012.

Nelson, who chairs the firm’s appellate practice group, was recognized in the annual edition that acknowledges the best of Michigan’s young attorneys.  To be selected for the honor, Michigan Lawyers Weekly looks for lawyers who have established a name for themselves earlier in their careers and are “poised for even greater accomplishments in the future.”

Nelson has successfully represented clients in the U.S. Supreme Court, several federal courts of appeal, the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Court of Appeals.  In 2012, Nelson rose to an honor and challenge typically not experienced by an attorney who has been practicing for less than 10 years when he successfully argued a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.  The case dealt with rights of an individual to challenge the federal government’s decision to take land into trust to be used for a tribal casino in Michigan.

In addition to representation of firm clients, Nelson has submitted amicus curiae briefs in both state and federal courts on behalf of the Defense Research Institute, the Coalition of Christian Colleges and University, the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel and the Michigan Health & Hospital Association.  He works closely with trial litigators to prepare appellate strategies even while a case is still in the trial court system.

Nelson has been appointed to the Defense Research Institute’s national amicus committee, elected to the board of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, and twice been awarded a Distinguished Brief Award by a panel of jurists and professors for amicus briefs he has submitted to the Michigan Supreme Court.  Nelson has been recognized as a Rising Star by Michigan Super Lawyers.

Nelson is a member of the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and Grand Rapids Bar Association.  He is a board member and co-chair of Appellate Committee for the Michigan Defense Research Institute and the Michigan Appellate Bench Bar Conference Foundation.

Active in the community, Nelson serves as president of the Board of Trustees of Harvest Orthodox Presbyterian Church, a member of National Advisory Committee for Dordt College in Iowa and a trustee of Kuiper College in Grand Rapids.

Nelson holds a bachelor of arts from Dordt College and a doctor of jurisprudence magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame Law School.
