Warner Norcross Offers Daylong HR Seminar

3/19/2014

The law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP will offer its popular human resources and benefits seminar on Tuesday, April 22 in Grand Rapids.

The daylong seminar will focus on “Strategy, Risk Management and Best Practices for Benefits and HR Professionals.”  More than a dozen Warner Norcross attorneys focused on employee benefits, labor, employment law and litigation will offer sessions on a wide range of topics during the seminar at the Amway Grand Plaza.

The seminar will be offered in two parts, and attendees are welcome to register for either a half day or full day.  The morning session, which begins at 8 a.m., will kick off with a health care reform update from Warner Norcross partner Norbert Kugele.

The afternoon session will begin at 12:45 p.m. with a new seminar component, mock trial vignettes. The vignettes will provide opportunities for participants to learn through demonstrations of mistakes made by HR professionals or other managers and how those mistakes might play out months later under cross-examination.

In addition, four general sessions and nine break-out sessions will cover a variety of topics encompassing timely issues, including:

  • Legal requirements for communicating employee benefits
  • Using data and metrics to drive tactical and strategic decision-making
  • Judicial interpretation and enforcement of employment law and proposed legislation
  • Proper handling and documentation of discipline and discharge issues
  • Workplace violence and bullying
  • Employee conduct investigations and legal implications
  • Defense of Marriage Act’s impact on 401(k) and defined benefit plans
  • Organizational succession planning
  • Challenges in FMLA and ADA
  • Background checks, privacy and Equal Opportunity Employment rights

The HR Seminar will feature a networking lunch that will allow participants to discuss best practices and interact with colleagues.

Attendees can receive 6.5 hours of general continuing education credits toward Professional in Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources recertification through the Human Resources Certification Institute.  For more information please visit www.hrci.org.

The cost of attendance, which includes lunch, ranges from $80-$190, depending on the number of sessions attended and client status.  A 15 percent discount is offered to organizations sending three or more attendees.  Pre-registration is required.  To register, go to WNJ.com/2014_HR_Seminar.  If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Sprague at ssprague@wnj.com.
