Schools of Hope is Warner’s Summer Community Service Project

6/13/2012

Schools of Hope, a tutoring program aimed at Grand Rapids Public Schools elementary students, has been selected as the 2012 community service project at Warner Norcross & Judd.

The project includes a book drive, fund raising and a push to recruit Schools of Hope volunteer tutors. The campaign kicked off June 12 with a presentation from Schools of Hope Executive Director Fritz Crabb who gave an overview of the 11-year-old program to fight illiteracy through in-school tutoring, after-school programs and family literacy classes.

Schools of Hope, administered through Heart of West Michigan United Way, puts hundreds of tutors in GRPS schools for 30 minutes a week to help students in grades 1-3 read at their grade level.

During the week of June 18, Warner will collect new and gently used children’s books, accept cash donations to purchase books and recruit volunteer tutors. Each of the six floors in the firm will compete for prizes.

Last year, Warner selected Kids Food Basket for its summer community service project. The law firm raised nearly $7,500 in a single week and assembled 2,000 snack packs for children in the Grand Rapids area.
