At Warner Norcross + Judd, we’re more than our Best Lawyers in America designations and Cool Places to Work acknowledgements. As one of the largest and most successful law firms in Michigan, we handle business and legal matters, whether simple or complex, from start to finish.
We provide client-focused, proactive legal counsel to clients of all types and sizes – from startups, to Fortune 500 companies, to personal and family matters. With more than 230 attorneys working in 13 industry groups and 20 specialized practice areas, Warner can meet the legal needs of any client. Our attorneys are leaders not only in their profession but also in the Michigan communities where we live and work. We donate our time and talents to pro bono work, serving on boards, and volunteering for nonprofits in our communities.
Professor William Henderson of the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University interviewed a cross-section of our attorneys to find out what it is like to practice at the firm and captured the “Warner Way” in the following explanation:
“The Warner Way is the pervasive belief held by the firm’s professionals that the firm operates for the benefit of its clients, lawyers and professional staff; no individual or subgroup is privileged above the welfare of the entire firm. This is not a slogan; it is people’s conclusion based on years of experience.”
“The Warner Way enables people to do outstanding work in an environment that they believe is respectful, ethical, transparent and free of internal competition. It is a safe environment where people can be themselves. This creates a large reservoir of goodwill that enables stakeholders to look past imperfections and problems; it also instills loyalty and a desire to build one’s career at Warner.”
Warner’s lockstep compensation model encourages teamwork, and distinguishes us from our competitors. Associate salaries are set based upon seniority, not total hours worked. The lockstep model encourages the client’s legal project to be routed to the most knowledgeable person in the firm because compensation is not directly impacted by hours worked.
This team approach yields better legal representation for our clients and lays the foundation for a fun culture without internal financial competition. We use the lockstep compensation model for partners too.
“The lockstep compensation model is more than just how salary is determined at Warner. It really speaks to the whole firm culture. When choosing to accept a full-time offer from Warner I considered how the aspect of lockstep compensation institutionally affirms the team-player mentality I felt throughout my interview process. Not only do the other attorneys genuinely want us to grow professionally and be successful, but one person’s salary isn’t diminished by someone else’s success. A big win for one of us is a big win for all of us.”
