With a population of nearly 115,000, Lansing is Michigan’s state capital and its fifth largest city. It’s also the base of operation for Warner’s growing Government Affairs Practice Group, allowing for daily contact with lobbyists, political action committees, legislators and state agencies. Our office is located one block from the Capitol Building and less than a quarter mile from most departments of state government, administrative agencies and the courts.

But we don't just work in Government Affairs. We also are experienced in energy law, litigation, government affairs, election law, lobbying, administrative law, campaign finance, environmental law and related matters. We know not only the substance and process of the law, but also the people who make, enforce and interpret the law at the seat of state government. And just like the attorneys in our other six Michigan offices, we have access to the intellectual capital of the entire firm.

In addition to government, the Lansing area is an educational hub. Nearly 45,000 students attend Michigan State University in neighboring East Lansing. They come from more than 100 countries to study business, education, engineering, life sciences (MSU has three medical schools), law, physics, agriculture and other subjects. Thomas M. Cooley Law School and Lansing Community College also call Lansing home.

The three education institutions are significant employers in the region. Other major industries include insurance, healthcare and manufacturing. Lansing is home to four national insurance companies and a several information technology and biotech firms. General Motors has a high-tech manufacturing facility in Lansing. Nearby, Spartan Motors manufactures vehicles for the U.S. Military and chassis for Isuzu trucks.

Cultural and educational opportunities are plentiful throughout the region. Lansing hosts jazz, blues and folk festivals in addition to its Common Ground Music Festival, which brings national headliners to multiple stages each summer. There’s also Potter Park Zoo and the historic Turner Dodge House. MSU draws world-class performances to its Wharton Center for the Performing Arts in nearby East Lansing. East Lansing also hosts an annual Art Fair and the Great Lakes Folk Festival.

MSU also brings Big Ten sports to the area. On the gridiron, the Spartans have won or shared six national championships and seven Big Ten championships, including in 2010. The men's basketball team won the national championship in 1979 and 2000 and made it to the NCAA’s Final Four as recently as 2010. The women’s basketball team won the Big Ten championship in 2011.

If baseball is more of your thing, the Lansing Lugnuts, a Class A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Toronto Blue Jays, play in Thomas M. Cooley Law School Stadium in downtown Lansing, the main attraction in the city’s renovated Stadium District.

The myriad recreational opportunities available in the Lansing area, along with the city’s economic stability, affordable housing, quality workforce and advanced education opportunities, earned Lansing a “Five Star Quality of Life Quotient” rating from Expansion Management magazine.
